How the Bitcoin Power Law and Prediction Markets Work Together

Glimpse BlogOctober 21, 2026

The Bitcoin power law is the best-known long-term Bitcoin price prediction model. Fitted to every daily Bitcoin price from July 2010 to February 2026, it explains 96% of the variation in price. It shows where Bitcoin is heading over years, not where it will trade next week. A prediction market covers the short term. It combines many traders' models, the power law among them, into one live forecast.

What is the Bitcoin power law?

The Bitcoin power law says Bitcoin's price grows with its age raised to a fixed power. Age is counted in days since Bitcoin's first block on January 3, 2009. The best-fit power is about 5.7. Each time Bitcoin's age doubles, its trend price rises about 52 times.

A power law draws a straight line on a chart with logarithmic scales on both axes. Bitcoin's price has tracked that line for 16 years, across six orders of magnitude, from $0.05 to more than $120,000.

How strong is the Bitcoin power law fit?

R² measures how much of the movement in a series a model explains, where 1 is a perfect fit. The Bitcoin power law fit across 5,704 daily prices has an R² of 0.96. The fit has grown stronger as data has accumulated. Refitted at the start of each year using only the prices known at the time, R² has risen every year since 2016 and has held above 0.95 since January 2023. The fitted power has stayed between 5.6 and 5.9 since 2017.

Two series that both trend upward can show a high R² by coincidence. The stronger evidence is stability. A fit that keeps the same slope and keeps improving across 16 years and four market cycles points to a real long-run trend.

On that trend, Bitcoin's fair value on October 21, 2026, is about $153,900. The same line reaches about $844,000 on January 1, 2033.

The power law and short-term forecasts

The power law describes Bitcoin's trend over years. It doesn't try to say where Bitcoin will trade next week. Since 2010, Bitcoin has traded between half and double its trend value on 69% of days. On October 21, 2026, it trades near $84,500, below its trend value of about $153,900. The power law doesn't say when that gap will close.

A prediction market adds the short-term view. Traders bring their own forecasts, the power law among them, and back each one with money. The market price works like a weighted average of all those forecasts, where each one counts in proportion to how much its trader is willing to bet on it.

A prediction market learns from every model at once

Traders forecast Bitcoin with many models. Some use the power law. Others use volatility models, time-series models, machine learning, on-chain data or plain judgment. Each model works in some conditions and fails in others. A fixed model cannot tell when it has stopped working.

A prediction market lets these models compete with money. Glimpse runs a cost function market maker, an automated market maker that quotes a price for every possible outcome at all times. This kind of market maker is mathematically equivalent to a family of machine-learning algorithms called no-regret learners. Each trade acts as a new training example. The market maker's capped worst-case loss becomes a guarantee that, over time, the market's forecast stays close to the best fixed forecast in hindsight. The market updates with every trade and never needs anyone to refit it.

The pricing rule also rewards honesty. Under the logarithmic market scoring rule behind Glimpse, a trader earns the most, on average, by betting on exactly what they believe. A trader whose model spots something the market missed profits by moving the price toward it. A trader whose model is wrong pays for the error. The market price becomes a blend of every model in play, weighted by how much each trader is willing to risk.

The grey band shows how far apart traders' views are. One hour out, the typical spread is about $170. Two days out, it is about $2,400. Traders prefer to bet close to the time a market settles, so the nearest markets draw the most money and the sharpest information. Markets further out draw less money and serve as a rougher guide.
